Fruit + Veggie Experts

Buddy Broccoli + Silly Strawberry wants you to learn the difference between a fruit and a vegetable!

Students will participate in a picnic activity that includes tasting fruits and veggies while we learn the difference between the two. This lesson promotes making healthy nutritional choices and movement breaks.

Teachers are often surprised at how adventurous the "picky" students become during this lesson.

Curriculum/Learning Outcome:
Humans and plants depend on each other to meet their needs.

A Seed is Sleepy

What are the needs of plants? What is germination?

How do plants and animals depend on each other?

What is the life cycle of a pea? What is a pod?

Students will examine these questions while conducting a hands-on seed experiment and play an interactive movement game guaranteed to get them giggling!

Learning about life cycles can be a lot of fun!

Students will take home a planted seed to grow at home with instructions.

Students analyze environments and investigate interactions and changes.

Students investigate and examine the needs of plants.

Earth revolves around the Sun and rotates.

Grasslands Species-at-Risk

Students will explore the importance of conservation by examining one of the most endangered ecosystems - Canada’s Grasslands! Studies show that people care about the plants/animals they have a connection to.

Students will play a game, learn about Grasslands plants and animals and create their very own Grasslands Pokemon art.

Curriculum/Learning Outcomes:

Make connections between human activity and Earth’s systems.

Discuss the importance of governments, conservation groups, and First Nations, Métis, and Inuit communities working alongside Parks Canada.

Conservation can impact land, natural resources, and organisms.

Seeds, Climate, Agriculture

Students will explore agriculture through the lens of their favourite cereals and play a seed-guessing game.

Conservation agriculture practices will be examined.

Students will plant a bean/corn seed to take home to grow!

Climate change can affect land, plants, humans, and other animals in a variety of ways.

Conservation agriculture is a sustainable practice that responds to local climate and weather events.

Climate and weather events influence agricultural practices. Examination of the Great Depression related to agricultural crops.

Classroom Composters

Overview: Learn about vermicomposting and the life cycle of red wigglers. Students will get to interact with red wiggler worms while learning how to create an ideal habitat for these super composters. Classrooms have the option to build their own, easy to care for, composting bin to keep. Classroom pets to teach about life cycles!

Coyotes in our Community

Overview: Coyotes aka "America's Song Dogs" play a vital role in our ecosystem, yet they often get a bad rap. Learning to co-exist with these wild carnivores is an important skill. Students will learn science about the urban coyote population in Edmonton and do a hands-on craft. Each lesson and craft is adapted to grade level. Students will also hear an Indigenous coyote story. This lesson can be linked to various curriculum outcomes, just ask!
